Why Aren’t There More Gas Efficient Motorcycles Available?
By Harley | June 11, 2009

So I keep hearing, why aren't there more gas efficient motorcycles available right now? Don't the manufacturers know the price for gas is through the roof - or at least it was and it's headed that way again? Why don't they have more fuel efficient bikes available rather than so many of the larger bikes?
Well the answer to that is time. Until recently, the market in the US was dominated by those who were interested in having large, powerful, great sounding, hot looking rides. Now suddenly, that market has diminished and a whole new market has developed of drivers wanting cheap transportation, at an affordable price.
Many of the riders wanting bigger bikes were pleasure riders, but this large influx of new customers are wanting easy to ride, economical smaller bikes to ride to work and to run errands. Who knew?
And that's the problem. The manufacturers plan their production years in advance. When they planned the inventories of today, they expected the market to be demanding the bigger bikes. It's not like they can go out to the plant, shut down the line and say "Ok, we'd better start turning out more small economical bikes - we're going to produce 250's today."
There are parts to have manufactured, there are tires and wheels to buy, wires to produce and all of this has to reach the assembly plant at just the right time. The orders for the parts and wires and tires all have to be ordered months and months in advance.
That's why it always seems like the big corporations are so slow to act and respond to the demands of the public. There's a lot more to it than simply stopping that line and making a different bike. Those smaller bikes are coming. It just may take a little while.
